Auction News: Portrait of Sir Edward Monins by George Gower

Court artist George Gower painted Sir Edward Monins in 1575, showing him in this magnificent costume with gold thread. This was probably to celebrate his elevation to Knight of the Realm, a position that came with power and influence.

Elizabeth I liked to surround herself with clever and loyal men, particularly if they were handsome. But she did not hand out knighthoods willy nilly, so Edward’s must have been a great honour.

His family motto was ‘Mediocria Maxima’, or The Middle Way is Best. Elizabeth favoured moderation in most matters so would have most likely agreed.

However, there is nothing moderate whatsoever about his opulent costume, which would have been shockingly expensive. Even the feather in his cap is gold tipped!

One could compare him to a rather large and striking bumble bee!
