What is it really like to live in England’s finest Manor House?
We were very lucky to be sent a copy of ‘Secrets of an English Country House’ this week.
This gorgeous book explores the thrills and challenges of running a fine country house, through the hands-on experiences of Julie and Luke, the current Countess and Earl of Sandwich.
The couple moved in to Mapperton in 2016 and set about investing in its future, including opening to the public eight months of the year, hosting weddings and creating special events.
The book follows a year in the life of the estate with over 150 photos to bring each season to life. From Spring blooms and Summer dips in the Swimming pond, to Autumn rewilding arrivals and Winter frosts, it would be impossible to pick a favourite time to dream of.
Julie’s enthusiasm, energy and charm is evident in the way she tells the history of the house. She has clearly fallen in love with Mapperton and we get the feeling that this is in some way reciprocated. Old buildings often respond well to female champions and the estate is blooming.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved. It’s something we will treasure!
