Philip Mould’s Queen & Court: A journey through Royal portraiture

Elizabeth I and her inner circle are currently residing at 18-19 Pall Mall in London. And you can visit them.

The renowned Philip Mould & Company is holding an exhibition, ‘Queen & Court’, exploring how portraits of the Queen shaped her extraordinary reign.

The star of the show is the splendid Hampden portrait, attributed to George Gower. It depicts the monarch around 1563-7, at the height of her marriageability when she ranked as one of the most eligible royal partners in Europe.

Seeing the painting with our own eyes revealed so much more than any photo or print could. It really is sumptuous, the canvas positively glows.

We popped along at lunchtime. It was buzzing but not so busy that we could not get to enjoy the art. The exhibition runs until 10 July 2026 and is well worth a visit!
