A Weekend Stroll Through History: Exploring Badminton Village, South Gloucestershire

This past weekend, we took a slow, exploratory wander through the charming village of Badminton in South Gloucestershire. Even under a blanket of grey skies, the warm ochre tones of the stone cottages stood out, glowing gently against the subdued light. There’s something magical about villages like this - where even a dull day can’t dim the character and beauty etched into every wall and winding lane.

Badminton is steeped in history. First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the village was originally recorded as Madmintune, a name that has evolved over the centuries into the Badminton we know today. It’s always fascinating to see how places shift in identity over time, yet still hold on to their roots.

The village is also home to Badminton House, the grand estate that has served as the principal seat of the Somerset family since the late 17th century. Set in expansive parkland, the house is a striking centerpiece of the area and adds a regal charm to the quiet countryside surroundings.

Whether you're a history lover, a fan of English countryside charm, or simply looking for a peaceful weekend stroll, Badminton offers a unique and enriching escape. It’s a small place with a big story - and well worth the visit.
